Mr. Matthew L. Carl

Mr. Carl is a Georgetown, South Carolina native who earned a Master of Music in clarinet performance from the University of Southern Mississippi after undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina. Under the clarinet instruction of Mr. Douglas Graham at the University of South Carolina, he earned the Bachelor of Music with a performance certificate. He also studied conducting with Dr. William Moody and Dr. Thomas Fraschillo.

Mr. Carl is now in his fourth year as the director of bands at Sneed Middle School. Prior to coming to Sneed, he was the director of bands at Williams MS for 5 years. His band programs have consistently achieved the SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award. His students are also placed in the Eastern District, Region, and All-State Bands. Prior to coming to Florence, he worked with Dent Middle School and Richland Northeast High School Bands in Columbia, SC. He has performed with the Mobile, Meridian, Long Bay, Beaufort, Lake Murray, and Florence Symphonies. He is currently a member of the Florence Area Big Band and is the principal clarinetist of the Palmetto Concert Band, who has performed at the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in 1999, 2008, and 2016.

Mr. Carl maintains professional affiliations with the South Carolina Band Director’s Association, Music Educator’s National Conference, South Carolina Music Educators Association, International Clarinet Association, and the National Band Association.
